Chain Slipping When Gears Are Being Changed.

Hi, I'm new to mountain biking so please go easy!

I purchased a Carrera Vulcan to gain some fitness and I'm having problems with the gears on the front derailleur.

When I shift up to number 2 the chain starts to make a clicking sound as if it's not fully on and I have to press the trigger in a bit more until the sound stops and its the same when I try and go onto the third cog.

Coming down the gears sounds fine it's just when I'm moving up.

I'm had a read of the manual and it stays to "Turn the large ring adjusting screw so that the derailleur just clears the chain"

I tried turn the H screw but that hasn't done anything.

Here's a picture of what I have...

Can anybody give me any advice on this.

Thanks

Could be a cable tension problem. The H and L screw simply set the limits of movement for the derailer cage - the tension governs how far it moves per click.

Park Tools has an excellent guide on this (see my sig for a link)

Thanks I'll have a try of that tomorrow.
  • My Sram x7 does this..
I dont find it a problem personally, the same happened with my old bike and im used to pushing the trigger slightly further.

From your picture, if you are trying to be in the cog just below the chain, the cable tension isnt tight enough.
By 'Turn the large ring adjusting screw', it means the twisty screw thing where the cable comes out of the shifter box thing (heh, cant remember what its called.. the thing with the triggers:)).
    Turn it anticlockwise (i think).
That will move the derailleur (as seen in the picture) downwards.
Carry on until it shifts properly.

    Cheers for all the help.

Had a play about and it's much better. Sometimes doesn't go onto the second cog at the front as easy as it should be it's a much better improvement than it was.

    Thanks again.
  • I assume you brought it from halfords - take it back for a six week check and ask about it.
