Hi All - This is really a post on behalf of my mate who has the same bike as me...
Had his Giant XTC SE for over a year now, and he feels that this 9th Gear has worn out - as its constantly slipping, and no-amount of adjusting seems to solve the problem.
He wants to simply buy a new rear cassette, and I guess chain. This would eradicate the problem we guess.
Please could I have some pointers on what/which set to buy? and where from?
Also, some rough pricing would be good, incase he wishes to go direct to a LBS and get it done there.
Any further info welcome....

9th gear as in smallest cog? You may just be able to replace that... however the old chain may still slip on it. Same goes for a new cassette - buy a new one, and you need a new chain unless the chain is very very new.
15-20 quid will get you a Deore. Heavy, but durable. 25 quid an LX, bu the best value I think is an XT at about 35 quid in some places.0 -
Yes the smallest cog on the rear.
Thanks for the info, I will pass it on - I think we where right in assuming its a whole new cassette and chain to erase any issues he may have.
The existing cassette and chain are stock from when he got the bike, so wouldnt hurt to replace to be sure."I don't do double-entendres, but I do like to slip a big one in occasionally"

Might be worth a quick check that the cassette hasn't come slightly loose. The smallest couple of cogs aren't part of the main cassette and can spin on the hub if it does come loose - leading to constant slipping.
Change into a different cog and try to use your fingers to try to move the smallest cog, if it moves separately to the rest of the cassette then it just needs tightening. If everything moves together, I've nothing to add to supersonic's advice.0 -
Worth checking first, thanks GHill -
Just been on Ebay, does it matter what amount of teeth is needed on the cassette?
Im guessing finding a compatible chain is equally as crucial(?)"I don't do double-entendres, but I do like to slip a big one in occasionally"

The teeth number effects the ratios - but some rear mechs cant clear the 34t large cog (most modern ones do). A 30t rear for example will have a closer jump to the other cogs, but at the expense of a low winch gear. Up to you.
As for chain; try a SRAm pc971.0 -
it might nust need the mech/cable adjusting."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

These are excellent cassettes (I use one) and a good price with chain.

AND with a PC971 chain as per SS recommendation0 -

I wouldn't say they can spin on the hub because of the splines, but the 2 smallest cogs can definitely come loose.
In my quest to fix a creak earlier I noticed my chain was slipping in 8th and 9th,turned out my lockring had either come loose or I hadn't tightened it properly and the 2 smallest cogs had a small amount of back and forth movement.
After tightening the lockring properly I had no issues with the chain slipping.
Still haven't fixed my sodding creak though=========================================
Dot 4 in the eye hurts. Trust me0 -
Here's another for you Cunning - my Zaskar used to creak - until it dropped to about freezing point, then it stopped!0
