That's the way I see it, although I don't ride with people who don't don them. I'm not dragging head injury Bob AND my bike back to camp. It'll never happen. I'll send someone back. JK. :?

I have a friend back in Seattle who went for a ride on the Robe rail Trail, fell down a hill and was found a day later. He survived because of the helmet. It was obvious to the doctors and us guys who saw his helmet a month later. Not pretty. Although, it looked boderline, but still, that's too close.

I wear helmet 100% of the time. My first accident would have been the end of my had I not been wearing one, andf I was only going at 10mph. Should be compulsory.

    I don't wear a helmet.

Years ago I had an accident with a car, I wasn't wearing a helmet and bumped my head on the car windscreen, ended up with a small bump on the head but I'm still here to tell the tale.

Now I bet if I was wearing a helmet at the time someone would say it saved my life.

On-road, I wear one when on my Road-bike - Off-road I tend not to when on my Hybrid on a long foot/cycle path-route - I came off my Hybrid on the Road a while back though and luckily had my helmet on - the side of my head smacked into the road at about 10-13mph - very pleased I was wearing the helmet - it definately prevented and open head wound and possibly concussion.

I used to be 50/50 on wearing a helmet until I headbutted the kerb after a skid and knocked myself out. Knocked a lump the size of a golfball out of the side of the helmet which I was wearing because of wet roads that day. That sort of made my mind up and I always wear one now but I find them uncomfortable and would rather not wear one especially in the summer.
  • In the past three years I've had the same number of serious crashes. Two involved cars and the other was my own fault. On each occaision, after having scraped myself off the tarmac, my helmet was'nt even scratched despite some big holes and/or tears in mty clothing and body.(mainly shoulders and hips). I will continue to wear a helmet if only because of Sod's Law.

  • I never used to wear a helmet, but then joined a club where helmets are complosary. After that I have worn one ever since. The only time I don`t bother if when I ride into town which is less than a mile !

Dr Ian Walker of Bath University measured the effect of cyclists wearing helmets from a motorists point of view. The results showed that drivers perceive cyclists without helmets as more vulnerable and less competent than those with one. On average motorists pass 3.3 inches closer to you if you wear a helmet.

I won't ride with another rider iif they are wearing a helmet. I'm sorry they are just going to have to remove it. Far too dangerous. :D

I've come off a couple of times wearing a helmet and not wearing one... each time it's made no difference as I seem to know how to fall and so far it's always managed to protect myself from serious harm.

I tend to wear a helmet in any case as it's not a big deal and after the first couple times when it feels un pleasant you get used to it and barely notice it

The club that I'm in don't make wearing helmets compulsary, I've often gone on club rides without a helmet, most of the time I just wear a cap.
  • Is it really so bad wearing a helmet anyway? All of the good ones out there now don't weigh a thing anyway and you soon forget you've got it on!

I wear one because, well, you never know....

I think the race part is really irrelevant.

Wait, no brain, don't need a helmet.

Weird how some idiots think it's a protection thing or some crap. 8)

Heat stress is the answer, not weight.

I have a Giro Atmos which I bought to tour New Zealand where they are compulsory. When I put it on I thought this is not so bad, maybe even ok". Then I hit the mountains. Even at only 25C the heat stress was terrible so I took it off and felt almost instantly better. I took to removing it for mountain climbs and enduring it elsewhere.

Very often you see people posting that they have no problems so do not see why anybody else would. The answer is that my physiology is different to yours.

What is the helmet going to do for me? It is not designed to provide any protection when hit by 2 tons of metal at 70mph, it is designed to provide some protection in simple falls at low speeds. In my book it is simply a sop to people who think cycling is dangerous.

However, I am not anti helmet simply anti compulsion. If you choose to use one then that is fine by me.

It is exactly those sort of low impact falls that are most common IMHO, certainly in my case. I don't believe helmets are some kind of cure-all and fully agree that they are useless in most life-endangering accidents but the have saved me from a very unpleasant headache/abrasion/concussion type injury on more than one occasion and that's why I wear one.
I agree in freedom of choice though!

That's correct, and is really the crux of the matter - helmets provide some protection for relatively low-energy impacts - ie front wheel goes on bend at 13mph, side of helmet smacks the ground (it's happened to many of us) - and agreed, helmets won't be of much assistence in a relatively high-energy impact such as the 2 tonne at 70.

    Fully agree with that.
