What a great way to start this morning - the sun came up over the horizon with fingers of light breaking over the frosted fields and through a small copse just after I had cross a bridge over the M1...is there a better way to start your day?

I'm with you Wastelander. I'm complettely spoilt on my commute with the sun rising over the Black Forest and Rhein, but low cloud and rain for the last week so I could be anywhere. http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/A-Termite-s-commute-to-work

    Yep +1 no better way

This morning I drove to work and it was rubbish. Tomorrow I'll be cycling the Long Route on my bike to work, about 80 mins each way through open country mmmm-mmmmm. And it'll be cold as hell too.

  • yeah was a great day for riding. My commuting ride was very enjoyable for he fist time in a couple of weeks. Shame there was work at the end of it but still a 15 mile ride is a 15 mile ride!

I had to take the pneumatic charabanc into the garage for its MOT on Monday (our best day this week in these Northern climes). I declined Mrs Pneumatic's offer of a lift back and, instead, put the winter bike on the rack.

I took the scenic (20 mile) route home through crisp clear skies, achingly beautiful (and cold) countryside and wondered whether life could get any better. I'd only been home half an hour when the garage phoned to say the car was ready to be collected. Imagine my delight at being able to climb back on the bike and set out once again into the morning.

These occasional stunning winter days are a real, genuine, unmissable treat!

  • Did a training spin over to Ilkley and back yesterday - there was a definite temperature difference between being down in Ilkley town centre and going over the top of the Cow & Calf, despite being warmed to some extent by my exertions on the way up!
Stayed in today and sweat buckets on the training rollers instead....

My 13 month old van decided to destroy it's starter motor and as it had been taken to the main dealer (8 miles away) by the RAC to be replaced under warranty, I had the pleasure of (on a crisp Wednesday afternoon) cycling up the Avon Gorge and across Bristol and out towards Bath.

I joined the A4 Portway at the same time as a distinctive Red van and being a 50mph dual carriageway he left me miles behind. However when I hit the inbound cycle lane under the Clifton suspension bridge I caught up with it soon after.

It was nip and tuck along the tidal Avon to Temple Meads and then the Van left me behind as I turned along the A4 at "3 lamps junction" with the A37.

However as the A4 traffic ground to a halt near the Brislington trading estate I caught up again and as I turned into the garage I was slightly ahead.

I and the van had averaged 14.1 mph over 8 miles through town but that also included a couple of miles where the van would have been able to travel at 50 mph and another couple where it could have average 25/30.

Shows the state of traffic in Bristol along the A4!

    A very exhilarating ride!
