Depends what you wnat the bike for: commuting? Riding the trails and woods? Or dropping of cliiffs?! There are bikes to avoid, but it usually comes down to shortlisting a few and trying them out.
  • thanks. am going to use it on trails and woods. will i go for hardtails?based on your experience, what brand would you suggests with a budget of 500 pounds. what are the bikes to avoid. again thanks

there are many really good bikes around this price range.
look for Kona, Giant, specialised, trek, in fact ALL the major makes manufacture great bikes at this price. look for last years model (because they are cheaper) and read tests of the bike before you ask for a test ride. then test ride them
there are a few turkeys out there and the magazine tests should point them out.

ALWAYS start riding on a hardtail it will get you skilled much faster than a full susser.
every time you go out riding do one thing that scares you. when it doesnt scare you anymore find something else as well and ride them all as fast as you dare. When you are comfortable try upping the pace and finding something sillier.
ride with people better than you and try to keep up it will show you what is possible and encourage you to try what looks impossible at first.
most of all laugh about it!
I never touched it! It was broke when I got here.

For around £500 quid the GT Avalanche 1.0 may be your best bet, suposed to be the best bike in that prie range.
The Carrera Fury (from Halfords) would also be worth looking at, that's also meant to be a top drawer bike for the buck.

  • I brought an GT Avalanche 1.0 about 6 months ago. When I started it was only going to be used for nice long cross country rides, but ended up spending most of my time at Chicksands giving it some serious abuse!!!!! Brilliant bike love it!
The aim of any argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress.
  • carrera fury is a amazing bike for the money, unbeatable (in that price catagory!)
