Hi all, has anyone got any tips for squeaky brakes. Is there a quick remedy??

  • Try sand paper them a bit, to remove the glaze...

Then, try to adjust them so they are toe-in (the front of the brake shoe is more closer of the rim than the rear, so front brake first and it doesn't squeak)

alternatively grease them - this will stop them squeaking and from working

seriously though what bobtravers said should sort it

I personally prefer to use a metal file to dress my pads, as it's perfectly flat and bits don't fall off/embed in the block!
I also check them and pick out any metal filings/grit with a jeweller's screwdriver.

At this time of year, I also like to use a Mavic rim rubber - or if you have more sense than money, a judicious clean of the braking surfaces with an old rag to clear out all the grit and grime.

A soft compound block such as Swissstops (or Koolstops) will remedy it, if what's already been suggested fails.
