hi first time post
i want a bike ,hardtail ,iam 40 ,14 stone and not fit anymore ,i used to ride about 15 years ago ,had a rockhoper and had great fun on it, looking for something for about 400 to 500 pounds ,iam not going to go mad on it just a good ride around the trails
advice i need , i know nothing about forks or brakes i had none of those on my rockhopper back then so in the dark now ive sat on a rockhopper 17 inch frame and fits me well but what do i reallt need for honest trail riding at my age

    Hi Tony

That budget is where the real magic starts - damped forks, hydraulic discs - best thing you can do is go and test a few out and see and feel the difference over your Hopper. As for size, again, need to test, they vary from brand to brand.

The What Bike thread has some good suggestions for this money.

Erm, at 40, you're not old.

For that sort of budget and riding, have a look at some of the following:

    Specialized Hardrock & Rockhopper
    GT Aggressor
    Giant XTC

If you can, get a test ride on them to see which bike suits your riding position/style.
  • thanks all iam swayed by the rockhopper since ive had one before not tried a GT yet doing that tomorrow thks for the reply il let you know how i get on
ps is there any forks i should steer clear of in this price range
    regards tony

TBH, within this price range all the forks are much of a muchness. Personally, I'd steer away (pun intended) from Manitou, although they have improved in recent years. Give each bike you test a good 'bounce' on the forks and see which is the better movement.

Also look out for forks with a lock-out function - this is extremely useful if you do a lot of climbing or road riding.
  • Try a Giant Terrago, they are good value for money. about £425 and you get a half decent set of forks (even if they are suntours) and hydraulic disc brakes. also a very light nice frame:)
Who said gears for queers? i wanna find them...

Avoid Marzochhi MZ forks, the MX ones are good, but the MZ's are cack. RockShox are also good forks.

Look for forks with damping & a lock out is a bonus for climbing & road riding.

    Im 46!
(all my own teeth and few from other people on a string round my neck)
    a Kona Blast
really nice bike but if you can get the cindercone robust good spec and fun to ride. Just bought the wife one!
but there are lots of nice bikes out there for the price. try them, read about them and dont be fooled by "bling" if the review says its great it probably is but RIDE IT FIRST!
I never touched it! It was broke when I got here.

I'm 44, and only have the one false tooth - although it is held in place with 3 Ti pins embedded in my Jaw. :D

Out of the 2 you have mentioned I'd get the GT, the Kona isn't as as well specced as the GT

I'm assuming you mean the Kona Blast '07 (blue frame colour) & the GT Avalanche Disc '07 (black frame with grey & gold bits).

    - The most complete £500 bike we've ever ridden

The manual that comes with GT bikes is utter gash! They should be ashamed of themselves.

If someone could kindly pop 'Zinn and the art of mtb maintenance' in your Christmas sack, you'll have a great start.
  • well ive ordered the book looking forward to the weekend
    getting excited now ;)
    cheers
