Reynolds Attack wheelset
I'm still contemplating buying a set of Reynolds carbon clinchers. The DV46C wheels are expensive at around £1250 so I've been looking at the Attack set at half the price.
Does anyone know if there's a 2008 version of the Attacks?
Any other comments appreciated.
Thanks.

they are expensive ... I don't really think many carbon clinchers are worth it in all honesty. These wheels are £650ish compared to say a pair of Shamals or the new Dura Ace wheels at about £500. They are about 100g heavier than either, and almost certainly have inferior hubs (it's a taiwanese hub made for reynolds - might be good, but Record and DA are the nuts).
The Reynolds might be a bit more aero but probably not a huge amount in it, and are probably less durable (Campag wheels are very durable, shimano not bad, reynolds patchy).
Braking surface on reynolds will be vastly inferior as it's carbon.
They do look nice though. But I wonder why bother for that kind of cash. Either save the cash and buy some alu brake track wheels, or else spend a bit more and get some genuinely aero wheels.0 -
I brought a set of the 2007 model about six months ago from Enigma Bikes for £525:www.rainbowinternet.net/shops/enigmastore/catalogue/c10/p74
I've been really happy with them, absolutely brilliant wheels IMO. I've only ridden them in the dry but have had no issues regarding braking with the supplied pads and dura-ace calipers.
I had a set of Reynolds Alta Race on my best bike before and no issues with those either. They're now on my commuter and have been completely reliable in the 2000 odd miles I have ridden them through some very pot-holed London roads.
If you look over on weight weenies, many posters regard Reynolds as one of the best carbon wheel manufacturers and definitely one of the most durable.
Hope this helps

on the other hand i also had a pair of Alta Races and did nothing but break spokes... i am close to 13 stone though. they were only used for racing, but were discarded after a few months.
the reynolds wheels do seem to be very highly regarded, but al lthe spokes do seem to be on the thin side for heavier riders?0 -
It's when you're riding in the wet that you'll notice how poor the braking is with a carbon surface ... scary !
I can understand that if you want a very nice, reasonably light and affordable wheelset for sunny days then these might make sense. I would personally rather have new DA wheels, Shamals or handbuilts using something like the AC420 rim .... as you'll then have a wheel you can use in the wet as well.
I've had problems with Alta Races as well ... though the Attacks might be more reliable.0 -
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm 14 stone so the 20/24 spoke versions will be ordered - hopefully these will be reliable.0
