Winter gloves - a new approach to waterproofing

Hi

I don't know about the rest of you, but cold, wet, numb hands are the one thing I really can't stand about winter riding. I have become totally fed up of trying "waterproof" gloves (which very rarely are actually completely waterproof) - and my hands are ALWAYS cold, so today I thought I would try a different approach.

Taking a cue from divers' wetsuit theory (where you let the layer of water/sweat near your skin heat up, and this keeps you warm) I got hold of some cheap medical latex gloves and put these on under my normal sealskinz.

My hands started sweating after 10 minutes or so, and then stayed toasty warm (if a little damp) for the rest of the ride. A revelation! Warm damp hands beats cold, wet hands every day of the week!

Hope this helps someone out there. I'm still smiling :)

  • i use subzero gloves made by specialized they more than do the job (they are two pairs of gloves in one)
that is going to hurt in the morning
  • Wait until you get a mechanical/puncture in the cold...you'll be sorry then mate.

Dot 4 in the eye hurts. Trust me
  • Plus surely whenever you get to your location, your fingertips are going to be all wrinkly?! Sealskinz all the way for me I'm afraid!!

commuting in january I have been known to use thick marigold type rubber gloves with a thin cotton lining, and agree they are quite warm for an hour or so. I have divers' gloves in thick neoprene , but do not really find them as warm for some reason.
