Building up my first full suss bike and am looking at disc brakes at the moment...it's coming to either of these for a good price/function combination. What's anyones experience of either please? any advice on which ones to go for?

What are you wanting to do? Nines are very wooden, with quite an abrupt feeling whereas the juicys have more modulation.0

The juicys are a much more modern brake. The 9s are bombproof and a classic of their time, but not as sensitive to small inputs."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0

Avids are very spongy feeling where as Hayes are a lot more responsive. Out of the two I would say Hayes. But I would tend to go for Shimano as I think there the best value brakes out there or Hope as there made in the UK and the support is stunning these days.0

Avid all the way, I wouldn't ride a hayes brake if i got em for free. I just don't like hayes brakes. Unreliable, and a pain in the ass to work on, i almost cry when a customer brings in broken Hayes brakes into my workshop.
Hope are a good option too but slightly more expensive that Avid. I ran Hope brakes for a long time but swithced to avid about a year ago and really like my avid brakes, i like how they have more feather to them and they def don't feel spongy they just ain't on / off like hayes or hope.0 -
Having had both brakes on different bikes I would say the Juicys are better. Yes they feel more spongy but I actually like a pongy feel to my brakes. I felt the Juicys gave better modulation and are a breeze to bleed and change pads. The 9s are good and I'd be more than happy with them if thay came o a new bike but if it came down to buying brakes I would chose the Juicys.0

There are some good deals about on Juicys at the moment. What people have said above, i'd agree with. Hayes are powerful, but unsubtle, and i've had set up issues with them.0

get the juicys, i made a mistake getting my coiler with hayes on and there sh1t i think saving up to get hope m4's or avid juicy 7 carbons0

thanks for the advice... basically I've not ridden in ages until recently starting again. My old Kona Kula was great for it's time (it had rock shox quadra forks!!!....at the time I set it all up that was the best thing going, then I stopped riding and the kit has aged!!). I upgraded stuff on the Kona but still get backache from long rides so am going the full suss route now I've taken up riding again. I bought a full suus frame and want to build up a XC bike with room to do a little more if possible. Brake choices are as above though I've also found some dual control XTR discs as well...... any further advice?
PS. yes I know its a bit on an essay!!0
