Broken spokes. What to do?

O DEAR!
My trusty Carrera Fury 06 has finally failed on me. In a rather big way, the rear wheel has begun falling apart.
I noticed that one spoke had broken on the wheel when i heard an ominous noise from the back, and, on closer inspection at home at least 5 spokes have snapped off (just after the 90 degree bend out of the hub). I need advice on this!
The bike has about 3000miles on it and the bearings in both wheels could properly need new cones etc (notices some cracking type bits last time i had the hub open). The wheel clearly needs a fix, but, i am unsure whether to go about getting it fixed (how much is this likely to cost at LBS with new bearings and new spokes and just a general tune up for both wheels) orrrr to go about buying new wheels (if this is a good idea links to good deals online would be much appreciated).
Thanks for your help!

I'd get new wheels! The old ones need fully rebuilding if spokes have started to snap in this manner, and the hubs fully stripping and rebuilding - and even then the races in the hub are probably knackered. This can cost more than new wheels!
Merlin cycles have great deals from aout 70 quid - fully handbuilt wheels.0 -
interesting, would these be better than my current wheels (it feels like a waste if i don't at least upgrade a little bit), has a anyone got any ideas i have no idea what i really need apart from wheel diameter!

Even the budget ones will be better than what you have. You need a 6 bolt fitting disc hub - then you can choose a rim. For the Fury I'd recommend either the Mavic 717 or 719 - the latter slightly heavier but more robust.
Deore hubs are a good budget option, but if you can stretch to XT, you will have a light, durable and high performing wheelset for about 100 quid.0 -
Great advice! have you got any links just so i make sure i am looking at the correct stuff? Mavic 717 or 719 (are rims no?) and are the chainsets universal (i have a 9spd on there(stock)).

Basically spec yourself! The numbers refer to Mavic models. 717 is the XC rim, 719 the all mountain rim.
Most modern aftermarket chainsets are 9 speed, but you need to make sure it fits your bottom bracket (unless you are replacing that too)0 -
sorry think i've used the wrong terminology here, i actually meant will the back gears fit onto any rear wheel?free xbox 360s: http://360giveaway.co.uk/index.php?referral=172865

Yes, all the wheels come with a 9spd freehub body, the cassette will just slide on. You will need the tools to remove it though.0

I'd guess at 15-20 quid labour per wheel, then price of parts, maybe another 20 or 30 quid. And in the end you'll still have old hubs and rims ;-)
No matter what the LBS tells you, all the spokes need replacing once they start to go like this. Replace the broken ones and I will guarantee the others will snap.0 -
right after a quick lbs trip i found that it would cost about £20 to get the wheel fixed (with new spokes)...they suggest new wheels mainly Halos (any comment?)

20 quid is pretty good for a wheel rebuild and new spokes. Though the hub will need evaluating.
Halo do a variety of options. The reason I like Merlin is that they are handbuilt to a very high standard. Shimano hubs are proven (espe XT) as are Mavic rims. They also use double butted stainless spokes as standard.
I guess youd have to see what Halo models are available.0 -

You would need the 6 bolt int standard for the Fury.
Nice wheelset - not convinced its better than XT hubs on 717 rims though. The Crossride is hard to get parts for (esp spokes and bearings!).0 -

looking at merlin now...what are the spokes to go for? and which hub there are a few xt ones?free xbox 360s: http://360giveaway.co.uk/index.php?referral=172865

Looking in the handbuilt custom section, you want the XT 6 bolt hub. I'd stick with the ACI standard spokes - I have two wheelsets built with them, from Merlin, excellent.0

i think i would prefer a black wheel...black spokes? im assuming black disc means the rim is blackfree xbox 360s: http://360giveaway.co.uk/index.php?referral=172865

Black spokes are exactly that - coloured spokes! They are the same strength, but cost a little more. Same for rims usually.0

In the first link, everything is black, so no probs there! You'll have to google the rims to see which would suit you best. As with Mavic, one is heavier duty than the other.
The Deore wheelset - again, not convinced. The hubs are good budget performers, but for the same money you could have them built into Mavic X317 rims (a budget 717) which would be lighter and more durable.0 -
is the first link going to be a better wheel than if i had one made though?

It would be roughly the same, if you used an XT hub with a mavic 717 or 719 rim. They are both handbuilt.0
