Sure this has been asked loads before but a friend of mine is after a hardtail in the 1k to £1300 range and is confused. He was after a Stumpy originally but now is being distracted by Merlins and Scotts. He wants XT really although I think he'd just like a sexy bike really as long it was all sweet.

I'm not too up on the current scene with mtbs so thought I'd enlist you guys to give him some ideas.

What say you?

Dont' be swayed too much by XT - all Shimano groupsets are good - even good old Deore! It's nice to have a good groupset and all but it's not everything...

Obviously pay attention to the quality of the frameset - will not go wrong with a stumpy... Also, look closely at what forks you're getting, brakes and the wheelset. These things are ultimately more expensive to put right after you buy the bike; also, a dodgy wheelset, brakes or fork will ruin a bike much more than a cheaper groupset and cheaper finishing kit ever would.

£1000 - £1300 is a very nice budget on a hardtail and unlike smaller budgets, there's not one completely obvious choice...

Personally I'd put a 2008 P7 pro near the top of my list but then I already own the 2001 model...
  • Curtis trailboss with some DJ1's
  • I'd probably go for an On One Scandal or Rock Lobster TIG Team and keep the change.
    2006 Giant XTC
    2010 Giant Defy Advanced
    2016 Boardman Pro 29er
    2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
    2017 Canondale Supersix Evo
