calorie calclations
i have a garmin edge 305 (great piece of kit - what a gadgit!)
it tells me the calories burned. two questions:
1. does anyone know the formula it uses, presumably something to do with speed, ascent and weight and is it reliable
2. its easy to calulate calories burned/ hour (or convert to watts) but if you work out calories/per and divide by ave HR is this a good indication of fitness levels ie same power but with lower HR = good, with higher HR = cut out the beer and fags and do a few more miles

The Garmin is a great piece of kit but my only bugbear is the unreliability of its calorie measurement. It's dependent on the speed zones. I have not actually bothered to set these so maybe it's my fault but I have seen other users complain about the calorie measurements.
I work on a rough basis of about 700-750kCal per hour at tempo, which for me is in the range between about 70-82% and about 20mph-21mph.-- Dirk Hofman Motorhomes --0
