Lads, short of removing the bottom bracket from my old Merida to check its size how do I know what length and shell size to order, ( 68 or 70mm ) currently fitted with approx 9 yr old ultegra octalinks, is there a standard size ? and how can they be measured while still on the bike :?

measure the bb shell. 68 or 73mm wide.

You won't have a 70mm as that was for bikes with Italian threads - you'll have either 68 or 73mm in Ultegra.

IIRC, Dura-ace was only available in 68mm.

just take care as ther are about 4 axle lengths available in the V1 spline pattern.

a lot depends on the number of rings.
