The man's design fault -hernia.

Saw a GP yesterday who confirmed what I thought. Thankfully, here in Germany I will see a surgeon next week and hopefully be patched up (literally!) before Christmas.
Yes, it's the common man's hernia where the cord passes through the abdominal wall on its wall to my left ball. I am getting an expert at pushing it back. What amuses me as the gurlgling that goes on as I press! And the wind all the time!!
I'm 58, but I know boys and fit young men can get it just as easily. I had some pain on a ride six months ago - 15 miles out and thought I had pulled a muscle in my groin. It went after a few days but came back with increasing frequency and severity - then I noticed it was coinciding with tummy-grumbles.
Do I ride gentle before the op - and what about afterwards? (Although the surgeon will advise.)
Any advice from anyone?

A question for your Doctor really so don't accept any advice form anybody on here.
I had a similar problem exactly a year ago and did not stop riding (no pain at all). Keyhole surgery meant that I could have got back on the bike within a couple of weeks. However, as it was deep winter I took the opportunity to take the full 6 weeks off.
I noticed that Michael Owen went back to his work within a couple of weeks after his op and football, I suggest, is more stressful than riding a bike.
Give the doc a call back and don't take any risks.
Good luck and best wishes - you'll be back before you know it.
David.
p.s. please don't ask me who MO is !!!!0 -
Believe me if you have open surgery, rather than keyhole, you will not be riding anywhere in the weeks after the operation. Five years ago i had a double hernia and could hardly walk for five weeks, but before you start feeling sorry for me i must just add that it coincided perfectly with the World Cup 8)We are born with the dead:

good luck mate. I had a double hernia when I was 32 but I left it and it eventually healed itself after 6 month or so . (I tried to do situps holding a 56lb iron weight behind my head)
I've got a umbilical hernia now and I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse.0
