I started cycling last year after having a kidney transplant. Loved the sport and bought myself a Trek1400 and did a couple of sportives including the Cumbrian Challenge.

Anyway, its work bonus time and I was looking to invest in some new wheels as I have been told that these will make the biggest difference to performance (apart from good hard work that is!). I have £375 to spend. Other details that might help are; they need to be shimano compatible, I ride about 100 miles a week, I weigh 70kg.

Any advice will be much appreciated..............thanks :)

I have a pair of handbuilt Open Pro CDs on Ultegra hubs, and I also have a pair of Campag. Ventos (Fulcrums are made by Campag. although the R3s are better than the Ventos).

Between the two, I prefer the handbuilts.
Handbuilts are easier to repair, and can be replaced one at a time instead of as a pair.
They're also much more fun to order, as you'll end up getting a good feel for components, lacing patterns, rims, weight considerations etc.

If you're just using them "for best" then the R3s.
If you're using them more often and may need them tweaked occasionally, then the handbuilts (IMHO).

Having said that, the factory wheels are fab too - just not as great as my more expensive handbuilts.

Thanks for the advice, I see Wiggle are selling the fulcrum's with a 10 per cent discount at the moment.
  • Try these guys they are cheaper than Wiggle by quite a bit.

I bought from them, they were quick and good, make sure you ask for the lock-ring as it is specific to Fulcrum wheels.

Thanks Jamie - another £70 saved. That'll pay for the tyres, tubes and still some change :D

Or try Jedi Sports on ebay:

Not used them myself but i understand they are very good - Jedi Sports that is, not the wheels! I own Racing 0's and 1's and they are both utterly brilliant!
  • You might want to look at Fatbirds who are selling 2007 Mavic SLs for £399. They are a better wheel than the Fulcrum 3s.

Given they're not any lighter in reality, and less aero, how exactly are they better?

i think they are lighter ... fulcrum underweighs more than mavic does! F1s come out at 1650ish
