Rear derailleurs - LX M571 and XT M737

I have the LX (2001) on at the moment. I have trouble going over rough terrain with skipping when I apply high pedal force (I'm thinking chain tension is a factor). Also, changing up when going up-hill is a little painful...

I have an option to buy a little used 1994 XT M737 for a good price. I'm wondering will it be a significant upgrade?? Any valuable opinion and insight much appreciated

Cheers,

Ronan

Presumably you are talking about a rear mech (derailleur). It is unlikely to be this per se, more likely a worn chain and cassette, poor indexing, or a bit of both.

I would not recommend spending money on a new mech until you know exactly what the problem is.

if a fully it can also be poor cable routing, or even just that the cables need replacing.

and IIRC the spring is the same in the LX and the XT.

Like everyone else says could be something else causing the problem also try changing gear before you get to the steep part of hill helps you ride smoother and keep momentum up so in answer no i dont think its a significant upgrade p.s i dont mean this to sound like i'm questioning your riding ability just realised it might do!
  • Ok. Thanks for that. So, there is no sign of wear on the cassette teeth that I can perceive. Then, I need to check chain stretch. But I cannot find a dimension to indicate what the original length of the chain is, and allowable tolerance (I do not want to go to trouble of buying a tool - I can easily measure centre of pin to centre of pin along an adequate stretch of chain and compare dimensions to see whether it is still within allowable tolerances etc.)

Then, my original question still stands as to whether anyone has an opinion as to whether a 1994 XT would be a noticeable upgrade on a 2001 LX?

    Cheers,

Wear will be imperceptable on sprockets, check chain and if it's worn chances are so are your cassette and your chain rings.

I think the mech wouls actually be a down-grade. Technology moves a long way in 7 years.

make sure you haven't got a stiff link in the chain - this will cause jumping.

The mechs: if the cage is not sloppy, the XT might be better. If you run a 34 tooth cog, it will not clear though. Better is hard to define with mechs.

I use a 94 XTR - great piece of kit!

I second supersonic if it were an XTR then I'd say give it a go think it was a 94 i had on my old zaskar was a long time ago so could be wrong!
