Personally, I use bog standard Shimano cable bought in bulk from Parker International. Get the outer in 10m lengths, buy inners at just over a quid each and service or replace whenever they get sticky.
Make sure you get the 4-ringed outer end caps which are sealed - they are nearly as good as the trick mudproof cables but the whole plot comes at a much smaller cost.
You need a good pair of cable cutters - I have shimano and park and both are excellent - and a stanley pointed bradawl is very useful for opening up the nylon liner after you've cut a length of cable outer.0 -
Flying snakes. Totally mudproof. Utterly flawless without maintenance.0

the best cable is genuine Shimano SIS...cheap and guaranteed to work with shimano shifters and derailleurs
replace whenever it wears out....
found the Gore-Tex, Flying snake, etc. a complete waste of money
for SRAM setups the cabling is not critical as the shifter pulls more cable, it works well with Shimano SIS cable but you can still get good shifting with non-shimano cablecheck out my riding - www.robcole.co.uk Banshee Factory Team rider, Da Kine UK Team rider, www.freeborn.co.uk www.eshershore.com0 -

I disagree. I have used Goretex cables on several bikes since they were launched and provided they are fitted correctly they work for years. My current set have been on my bike for 3 years and I have had zero problems with the shifting in that time in all conditions.
Everyone has a different experience but mine have always been good and I would recommend them. I worked in the cycle trade for 10 years and I never found anything offered as smooth a shift as Goretex cables and that lasted as long without maintenance.
Just be warned they are fiddly to install and you have to ensure they are fitted correctly.0 -
gortex ones are fine untill you ride in the sea with them, afterwards they hold the water in.
i was under the impresion the 2:1 ratio (sram) were affected more by grime and grit due to the friction being multiplied :?:0 -

How often do people ride in the sea???? I can't see that this will be one of the reasons for not buying them for most people.0 -
I've now installed two sets of flying snakes and they have not needed adjustment once set up correctly. I stripped them down over the summer because i was bored and had done everything else but there was nothing in them, like new i say.0
