Hello everybody. I have a slight addiction to buying parts for my bikes and randomly upgrading them. I have decided that its about time i just sold my currently modified bike and bought a mid to high specked stock XC bike.

At the moment i have a 2006 Mongoose Tyax Elite with some Answer Pro Taper bars, Manitou R7 Supers (100mm with Click-It), RaceFace Evolve XC stem, and then some Avid BB5s in a box waiting to go on. The rest of the bike is stock.

I have decided that i want to go into the world of full suspension because im getting into the rougher stuff and am starting to find my good old Mongoose is a bit uncomfortable riding it.

Firstly, do any of you have an idea of what sort of money i might get for my Mongoose? Secondly, what sort of money am i looking at for a mid to high spec XC bike with shocks that i can either lock-out or crank up the PSI. Thirdly, sorry for the noob questions...

Cheers, Dom.

    Hi and welcome,

Not sure how much the Goose will be worth - sorta an oddball mix of parts with the burly frame, and light XC forks - maybe 300 or so depending on condition.

Looking at 1000 plus really for a full suss XC bike with those features. What is your total budget?
  • Less than i hoped for to be honest. Its a random mix because i kept changing my mind on what sort of riding i wanted to do. Iv finally decided that XC is the way forward for me so would prefer to get a bike designed for it.

Budget depends on what i can get for my Goose and how much i work at weekends until the good old january sales. At the moment my budget is probably about £800, im not particulaly botherd about year, and i dont mind used bikes as long as they are in good condition.

You dont really see many 'full bore' xc bikes at this price - many are trail/all mountain oriented as they are a bit heavier. Focus do have some interesting looking models at Wiggle, and the Trek Fuel EX 6 was a great bike for 2007.

    This may be of interest:

Frame is worth thqat alone, excellent shock, and well reknowned XC rig. Leaves plenty of budget to tailor it - I'd swap the forks as well for the R7. Only problem is limited size and testing.
  • Iv been looking on CRC before and was having a gander at the BeOne range, seem ok for the price but i hevent heard anybodys opinions (apart from the ones on CRC).

As far as trying different bikes goes, i feel rude just trying out ones at my local shop and then not buying from them because of their prices, and now my mates have stopped riding so im on my own and only have my own bike to ride. Looking for loca clubs now though.

Anywho, weights not to much of an issue because im not competing at the moment and the weight will make me fitter :D

That GT looks pretty good for the price, but does the frame have disc mounts? Also, id have to upgrade the hubs and brakes themselves if i wanted to put my discs on, but like you said, it would give me enough money to do that.

I bought a BeonE drone from CRC earlier this year, very impressed, but no idea on the full suss models. They seem good value, and I hear a couple of positive reviews from users.

I just bought also a GT IDrive ID XC.3.0 from 2005, and has disc mounts, but youd have to doublel check on the model above. I am 99% sure it does!

Local shops can have the benefit of better service and advice, as well as easy to reach aftersales care, plus free servicing. But depends what they have.

This is the other bike I mentioned:

    Stunning bikek for that money!
  • I might have a closer look at some of the BeOne stuff then if it seems good.

Dispite the Trek looking amazing, it would break the bank at the moment, i will keep it in mind though.

The first way i was looking at upgrading (instead of buying a new bike) was to buy a new frame and fit that. I was looking at the BeOne Nirvana 2.0 (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=21088), but thats a whole other ball game with geo and all that lark to look at, that i know pretty much nothing about.

Thanks for all the info so far though :D
  • Or how about this?

Swap the forks over, from your Mongoose, and you'd have apretty capable bike for your £600.
