Rusty chain

Hi,
Probably a stupid question - my chain has gone pretty rusty, mainly due to laziness after my last ride. I've scrubbed away but can't get all the rust off - any suggestions?
If I clean and re lube with some rust still on, will it cause any damage?

Well, it can do, as rust can be quite abrasive when suspended in oil and grime. Main concern is whether its functioning correctly and no stiff links.
