LX shifters not engaging

Hi all I have a fairly old (98 or 99?) Specialized Rockhopper with the original LX 9 sp shifters. I've noticed recently that both the rear and the front shifter are not engaging when I try to shift to a larger cog in either case (ie the larger "push" paddle). The rear will engage if you push it to where the second click could be, or if you wobble the lever around. The front also does the same thing, but doesn't engage at all unless your wiggle it around and it eventually pulls. Is there a simple solution to this, like a screw inside needing tightening? The internasl of the shifters as far as I can see look a bit complicated, like a traditional watch, so if anyone has a contact for Syler from Heroes, I might see if he can do anything...

I took the covers off yesterday and couldn't see what the problem was, and didn't at the time want to remove the cables so I could look at them closer

I've had my old shifters apart in the past. They are quite complex inside but you don't need to fully strip them, just remove the covers (don't lose the tiny screws) and give the innards a good clean with degresser and a toothbrush. Rinse all the degreaser out of them and when dry apply some oil. Did wonders for my old 97 8 speed shifters.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
