Any one using the new shimano alfine disc hub offroad yet it looks like a good alternative to destroying my shiny new XT mechs over the winter does it fit a MTB frame and has it got a low enough gear for winching up hills :?

I haven't used one but some things to consider are:

    1. Unless you have horizontal dropouts you will need to get the chain tensioner as well
    2. It can't possibly have the same range as a 3x9 set-up but may well have enough for local blasts
    3. Obviously you will have to spring for the cost of a new wheel
    4. SRAM have a 9 speed hub with standard 6 bolt disc fixings - the i-motion 9
    5. If you clean and lube your transmission, the winter won't do much more harm to it than the summer.
    6. Buying a full set of Deore Mechs, rings and cassette just for the winter would cheaper and lighter than a new Alfine wheel, 8 speed shifter, and tensioner.

No axe to grind either way, these are just what comes to mind for you to consider in your decision.
