Notches in my freehub body

I'm not sure if I've used the correct term in the subject but today I swapped my cassette onto a different wheel. I notices notches in the splines that the sprockets fit onto. What causes this? Over tightening the cassette perhaps?

Soft ally freehub...same on my alta race's unfortunately.
  • Mine are Alta Race's.

Edit - Is is going to cause any problems in future? Am I right in thinking freehub bodies can be replaced?

Small world :D Should'nt be a problem as long as the cuts don't go right through. PX do spare freehubs at £15.
  • Heh, I have it aswell, same wheels!

The more expensive cassettes with the sprockets mounted in groups on alloy spiders will avoid most of the notching.
If it gets bad enough, it will start to get a bit awkward getting the cassette off the freehub - won't slide off because the edges of the sprockets are in the notches, can't get the edges out of the notches because the freehub turns. You'll have to pull the cassette off in bits rather than in one go, that's all.
