Descending Mount Wellington Holbart, Tasmania. 19th December

two 20 year olds came hurtling past, I took chase and, as I passed them. one looked at me to say something, but instead he just mouthed...... WTF!! How old are you????

then the 3 of us just had great fun at speeds of up to 45mph

Riding - err, none really. Its been a bit of a miserable year all round.

Watching - the GB Team Pursuit squad breaking 4 minutes for 4K at the Manchester World Cup. Spectacular - almost defied belief.

Completing the 95km circuit of the cols Soulor and Aubisque and back to our camp site near Laruns after spending last winter trying to lose weight and regain a modicum of my former fitness. I shed a little tear as I drew up at the summit of the Aubisque and remembered my 2 previous visits.

My wife and I were lucky that we got a weather window in June. It was crap in France too last year :( Not bad for a couple of OAPs

I noticed someone mentioned a ride in the Vercours. We've been there a couple of times and it's a jewel of a place. Arguably the best scenery in France and that's saying something. Strongly recommended and handy for the Bike Bus route.

  • Same thread on another forum, to which I posted this:

Some good moments as a coach but since this is all about me :D

    1. Earning the right to wear this due to my first result at masters track nationals:

    2. Captaining the winning Team Pursuit team after 5 silver medals and a bronze in previous attempts. That's me on the front :)

Of course losing my lower left leg in a cycling accident two weeks after No.1 happened was a bit of a let down but I'll be back to race Worlds in '08.

    Alex,
Just the opinion of a mother of four on the other side of the world, but IMO, you're amazing. What else can I say????? :D
    Good luck for 2008

In May...riding an Audax, 90 miles in the hissing rain, stupid, but a great day!

In June...riding along the course of the river Somme and stopping to rest at a small cafe...friendly locals and strong French coffee...

In June again...riding to Bury St. Edmunds and staying overnight in a brewry...

...most of my rides to work all year...
...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...

Completing the Etape Legende nd the feeling of hitting the last climb, the Ballon, knowing that the finish line was finally within reach, with numerous names, countdowns etc on the roadside to encourage everyone to make it up to the top.
  • Great thread. Lots of inspiring stuff here (Alex and others).

Nothing so epic, but for me it was Mont Ventoux in September - first time riding on the continent and first serious mountain attempted. It was proper hard work, especially the long slog through the forest, but the views were amazing, great cameradeire from other cyclist, and it was great to bask in the satisfaction of doing it while achieving silly speeds without pedalling on the descent :D
  • Moving to the south of France, reading a book about the area and meeting some of the cyclists mentioned in the book - and being invited to cycle with them every week. Good roads here, lots of sunshine and great cycling.

Getting my first proper road bike.

    Watching Le Tour in London.

  • My personal moment was doing a 31 miler, have never exercisd before in my life until April 2007 that was a great achievement for me.
  • For me, rediscovering the love of being out on the bike after a (very) long time away from the sport (and rediscovering how obsessive you can become about this whole cycling malarkey)
