XC Winter Tyres

I've just discovered a decent slice in the sidewall of my Specialized Resolution Pro 2.1 tyre, so i'm guessing I need to buy a new one.
What are a decent winter XC tyre set that will handle the UK winter?
And also, should I aim for slightly narrower tyres to cut through the mud?
I ride mostly around the Three Hundreds of Aylesbury which is quite chalky but also sticky, claggy wet mud at this time of year.

Similar thing happened to me with the Resolution Pros which came with my Stumpy. Replaced my back tyre with a folding Panaracer Trailraker 2.1 based on the advice of my LBS. So far so good, seems to cut through the mud well, better than the Pros did.
I was never very impressed with the Pros, aramide plys in the side wall seemed to be exposed right from new, evetually I got a sort of hole in the side which the tube was bulging through. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
If it is very clayy then i'd advise the 1.9 trailrakers as I found the 2.1 would clog a little in particular consistencies.0
