Chain Length

Can any one tell me the proper method for determining the chain length. I'm buillding a bike up at the minute and I've read 3 different methods of measuring the chain length some involve putting it through the derailer to measure it and some say don't put it through the derailer. Anyone know the definitive method??

    if a shimano chain is says with the chain. have a read of parktools.

    there is no definitive method as it depends on the bike. but the 2 main ones do for most bikes.
