ive been asked to build a bike for my girlfriends dad, a decent quality off-road and on-road hardtail for £300 max. i dont want to use halfords they're crap. something thats just as efficient on as well as off road.
if possible thinking of a custom build but its going to be difficult at this price range, unless you good people have some advice
thinking of custom as he only wants 7 gears so can use funds on something else....

Mongoose Tyax Elite or Super are probably your best bet, damped forks for off road use & a lockout for on road use.

Small frame should be about the right size, but no substitute for a sizing test in the shop.
I have a 31" inside leg & ride a 17" Orange Gringo & a 18" Orange 5.
Roughly inside leg minus 14" = a rough guide to the right frame size in "0 -
Yove got no chance of a custom build at this price, and goung 7sp is false economy. Have a read of the What Bike thread0

Put in an extra £95 and get a Carrera Fury for £395 like I did in the Halfords sale. Considering it's £500+ bike, it's a bit of a bargain I hope...0
