Updating Old Orange With New Chainset

My friends old Orange P7 (+10 years old) is finally getting there....
Now have the STX Rapidfire shifters, along with cables to fit!
Replaced chain & rear sprockets.
Replaced bearings in Hope Hubs, and wheels trued
The chain is slipping on the front, rather than over everything! I'm guessing because the front chainset is pretty screwed, teeth are worn and and its not true, it waves by about 6mm.
My question is....
Looking at a hollowtech/hollowtech 2 chainset and BB... Is there a specific BB I have to go for? Or is it one fits all these days!?
Also when measuring the crank arm, where do you measure from and too? is it the overall legnth or is it from centre hole to centre hole? I'm guessing its probably 175mm arms... But need to make sure really...
Any help much appreciated!

Hollowtech 2 comes with its own 'intehgrated' external BB and spacers to fit most frames. Hollowtech 1 uses a standard cartridge bottom bracket, generally Octalink. I'd go for the latter - cheaper, and last longer. The axle length of it depends on the crank, and the shell width is the width of your frame - probably 68mm.
Most crank arms are 170 or 175mm, and TBH hardly makes any difference!0 -
I have two XT chainsets - one is a Hollowtech 1 with an XT Octalink BB, the other is a new M780 XT hollowtech II.
The new one looks better and weighs about 100g less but cost £30 more (£100 vs £50+£20) and the BB will last about half as long.
For the vintage of your bike, I'd also go with Hollowtech 1."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -
I've just put a set of LX HTII cranks onto an old p7 (with a 1" steerer) and it wasn't hard at all.0

I use a LX (2004) HT1 and Octalink BB which is actually lighter than the HT2 version! 55 quid for the pair from CRC.0

Sweet !!!
Thanx for all the answers guys!
All I gotta do now is convince him he needs to get it now! Found Deore Hollowtech 2 inc BB for £44.99 on crc... Couldnt find the LX HT1 with Octalink BB though. :shock:0 -
Thats a good price, but I imagine its a bit lardy.
