Perfect for the TransRockies?

Help! I'm a recently converted road racer, and currently have only a beaten up ancient MTB on loan from a friend. I've agreed to do the TransRockies this August but don't know what bike to get.

For some reason, I feel I would prefer to get a hardtail, but is that a stupid decision for a race like the TransRockies? (Will six days of hardtail riding leave me unable to sit down? )

And what about those 69ers? Are they a terrible idea, or the way forward for a race like this one?

My budget is between £1-2k, but obviously I would rather it was closer to the £1k if I'm not going to feel the benefit of the extra spending.

All advice gratefully received.

I'd personally go for a full sus. After riding in a group for a 24hour race, I couldn't sit down.
A full susser will weigh a bit more but your body will thank you.

Have a look at Specialized, Giant, Gary Fisher.

  • try to get a ride on a giant trance, 100mm travel is plenty for all day riding and the maestro suspension is excellent. I have the advanced which is carbon but I'm sure an ali version would ride real nice too. I think you may have to dig that other 1k out from the bottom of your long pocket to get something good.
  • Thanks. Full sus seems to be the way forward - although I suspect that this much saddle time is going to leave me sore no matter what I'm siting on. A friend of a friend has also recommnded an Epic. I can see I''ve got a lot of investigation to do. Let the test rides begin.

    Thanks again.
