Hi all.
My winter bike has a clicking selad bottom bracket so want to change it.
the chainrings are not that hot so will probably change that also.
I am looking at changing to a compact.
Currently my rear cassette is a 9 speed having replaced the previous 8 speed.
most compacts I have seen are 10 spped.
So basically i want to confirm i can use a 10 speed compact with a 9 speed cassete and chain?
Or would I have to use the 10 speed cahin and replace cassette and chain also ?

It'll be fine. The inside dimensions on 9 and 10 speed chains are, I believe, the same so there is no compatibility issues for chainrings between the two.

10sp chainsets will work fine with 9sp chain and cassette. If you get a none Shimano or Campag one it will probably be marked 9/10sp. The S and C units may have the rings slightly closer together than the others but the worse this will cause is a little more chain rub when running small ring / small cog which is not a good idea anyway. If you fitted a 10sp cassette you would have to change the shifters also. You can run a 10sp chain on 9sp (with Shimano anyway. I don't know about Campag). This will give a little more clearance between chain and big ring. I would not bother untill you need to change the chain.
  • I run a Campag 10sp compact chainset with 9sp no probs . I didn't think there were compatibility issues regarding chainsets .
