I'm replacing my cassette with a closer ratio 11-21 for time trialling next year.

I have two questions:
1. Which is better, the SRAM PG970 or the Shimano Ultegra? The rest of my kit is Ultegra but I'm not precious on what I have (I seem to remember that the cassettes are compatible)

2. I have a Shimano cassette tool already, would the same one be correct for the SRAM?

if you are going for a CR you might as well go for the 105 cassette because you are not going to save any weight with the ultegra . It only starts to matter when you get 12-25t and up really because of the aluminium carrier on the ultegra for the last 3 cogs

actually I'd be interested in what choice you have made ? 8 9 or 10 speed ? I am hoping to try some trialling next year myself and I am wondering if you really need a 10 speed cassette

nah ..you can get away with 1 for most 10s

    7,8,9 or 10 ...no problem

just keep rarios close so you can keep your chosen cadence at its peak..

a lot of TTers remove several sprockets anyway mabe keep 11-15 & revove last cluster ..

Not for the normal flattish 10 or 25 courses I'd say - I'll only use a few gears on those sort of courses. I've used an 8-spd set up for years quite happily for TTs. As long as there are no big "gaps" between sprockets, you'll be fine.
  • Thanks all.

I'll go for the SRAM as Chain reaction have them on offer at the moment at £25.

Peanut. Last year I ran an 8 without any trouble over a wide variety of courses between 7 and 15 miles.

I'm switching to a 9 because all the group is a 9 except the shifters but I have some Dura Ace bar ends for this coming year so as I'm going CR I might as well.

SDP - thanks for the info on the lock ring.
