Hi,

Took my new baby out for a spin yesterday, and noticed an annoyong metal on metal clang when going over pretty much anything, even dropping off a curb. It appears to be part of the rear mech hitting the underside of the tube that runs from rear wheel to bottom bracket, noticed it when on the smallest cog at the back, not sure if it happend regardless of gear.

How can a solve this? is there a knob to turn on the LX mech that restricts its movement up (towards the frame) ??

Not sure if i'm explaining myself well - but help!

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

  • looks like you have to adjust the "B" srew. If you look at the mech from behind you should see a screw very close to where the mech is bolted on the frame. try tightening that, see if it helps. For a more professional info look on the Parktool website. It's very clear and really easy to follow. Good luck!

It's just something that happens with those mechs. Simplest and cheapest way to remedy it is to fit a chainstay protector. You can make one that's incredibly tough out of an old inner tube, that will silence the chain slap and protect the frame from the mech.

Option 2, second cheapest, is to fit a new Shimano XT Shadow rear mech. The springs work differently to standard Shimano mechs, so that it doesn't hit the chainstays. Combined with a chainstay protector to stop the chainslap, you'll have no problems.

Third, most expensive option, is to upgrade to Sram X.7 or X.9. They won't hit the chainstay at all, and some people prefer the way they shift to Shimano. Personally, I prefer the shifting feel of Shimano, so my next upgrade will be an XT Shadow mech and dual release shifters...

If you don't want to change anything, I'm afraid you just have to live with it.
  • I've just upgraded from XT to XT Shadow and gone is the sound of the mech hitting the frame. Definately recommend the XT Shadow for solving your problem
