Manitou spring on a Fox shock

I have a fox DHX 4 rear shock and need to swap the spring for somthing a bit softer.
Is it able to run a Manitou spring (250 X 2.8) on the DHX 4 that comes on my 06 sx trail, which as far as I know has a 2.8 inch stroke.

    the manitou spring has a bigger ID so it might rattle and not seat correctlt but it should work even though the manitou spring is longer.
