New Bike

Looking to get a new bike, basically to ride to and from uni. My current one is about to collapse underneath me :P
I have a pretty small budget, not looking to spend a lot.
Was gonna check out halfords, but i was reading about the poor quality of their lower budget bikes...
How does this one look?

Oh and by the way, my last bike (apollo excel) was pretty cheap, and lasted me a while, so something similar would be great.
Cheers

I made my first post yesterday, so I'm a newbie too!! Therefore not too sure how good my opinion will be.
However my thinking would be that if the budget is on the small side, why buy something brand new? I reckon for £100 you could buy something more than suitable, and with a quality name. A little hunt on Ebay should come up trumps!0 -
EY up.
As everyone on here will tell you Appollo should be avoided at all costs! Well put it this way don't by another one if you can possible avoid it.....
Heres is an excellent bike for the money - you really should try and stretch your budget to this if you can . upgradeable in time, good geometry and rave reviews from riders that were on a budget. It's the absolute minimum you should spend.

Cheers for the advice, but I have a very low budget, im in my overdraft as it is
About the link to the bike i posted, what do you think of that?
As for looking at second hand bikes, I have no idea what to look to look for.. Can anyone give me any advice?0 -
The bike you are looking at is ok, but there is no way of telling the size. Plus the problem buying second hand, especially if you are a beginner, is you dont know the condition. Buying new is the way to go generally, as you will have it fully built, free service and a years warranty. Some great bikes from 200 quid, have a look in the What Bike thread. There are a couple under this though if really on a tight budget...
Giant Boulder
Buying from a local shop rather than off the net is the much better option.0 -

Giant Boulder
So is that giant boulder bike good value? Thats around the maximum id want to spend.
I would consider buying from a local shop, its just that their prices seem to be quite a bit higher than the internet. God I wish I had money :P0 -
They can be a bit higher, but will be worth it! You can just pop back in if it needs adjusting, you will get a free service and the shop will ensure its set up properly and fits. Sometimes they are just as cheap anyway, and you might get a free set of lights too!
It is a good bike for the money.0 -
Point taken about buying new ie. pre and after sales service. I only mentioned looking second hand as the opening post kinda suggests that price was highest on the checklist........but remember, I am a MTB jouster!0

what size would you recommend me getting? Im guessing the biggest I can, because I am 6foot 4
Cheers
Oh and also, about ordering from www.activesport.co.uk, would I need to put the bike together myself? Is this difficult?0 -
Youd have to try them for size.0

Its not really feasible to try it for size, seeing as they are based in buxton. Can't you give me a general size guide? As I said, im 6 4, about 85-90kg.

Roughly the 21 inch. There is a 23 inch, but thats pushing it! See if its on sale locally first.0
