What size bottom bracket do I have?

I've got an unbranded 36/50 chainset which I used with Shimano 8spd. It is square taper, but what is the axel length?

I'm slowly collecting all the parts to cheaply change the groupset over to campagnolo, and want to eventually change the chainset aswell. Will I be able to simply swop the chainset to a Campag compact without a change in BB?

No, the tapers are slightly different and you will need to ensure the axle is the right length for whichever chainset you buy. Campag square tapers up to Centaur all use a 111mm bottom bracket.

You might have trouble sourcing a square taper Campag compact in the future as they have changed to Ultra-Torque, in which case it won't matter as the axle is integral with the cranks and all you will need to buy extra are the bearing cups.
