Split chain links

Ive just taken the chain off my bike to clean it and properbly relub it and ive got a quick question about the split link, and all my other chains/bikes have just a full set of normal links that ive just pushed out with a link tool.
When i was trying to get it apart, by shortening it to unclip it, which seamed like the obvouse thing to do, it was fairly hard to get apart.
- I used a half decent set of pliers and gave it a good squeeze, and second time it came undone.
Cleaned the chain.
And then started playing with the link. I just lined it up in the shortend possition, and put a very small amount of force on it, expecting it to just sit there not actually done up (and not giving a good yank to get it togther, untill i've lubed it and put it round the bike.
- However, instead, much to my supprise, its just went together. And i could just push it again and it came apart.
- Futher investigation revealed that actaully it was very hard to get it to come undone, unless it was held manually in just the right place, when if fell apart with ease!
Is this normal. Will it be ok in normal riding conditions?
- Or have i just screwed it by cramming it apart with some pliers? (in which case, ill just take a pair of links out with the link tool and get a new chain next time its convinent)
For reference, its just a cheap OEM chain and link off a 07rockhopper.

Surprisingly simple when you know how (and I didn't  )It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
Ah yeah!
- So it should be fine then? well we'll have a go at that then.
- Its a shamarno chain btw, but im sure thats the same, Magic.

Probably. I've attacked mine in the past with pliers and it hasn't done them any harm. Now I've seen the light I can treat them with kid gloves. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Yeah, well it worked fine for three hours at cannock with the gf, so i guess that will do me!
- Unfortnatly my newly cleaned chain wasnt clean at the end of it again, and started suffering from chain suck again half way though.
- However said magic link is bloody amazing in terms of making taking the chain on and off for cleaning. Very clever stuff indeed.
Think i'll take the derailer cage apart tonight, ahhh, mud!!

pliers are usually fine if you know how to use them, it is just because the links get a bit stiff with all the pedalling!0
