First bike: bit of a tricky one...

I had originally set myself a very tight budget for a first bike, around the £300 mark. But as I've been looking I'm becoming more and more set on the £400-450 bracket instead. And I have a dilemma. I just need an opinion on which option is best:
a) Trek 4500 - like it a lot, good reviews and feedback. £400 plus a likely upgrade to disc brakes in the future.
or
b) Genesis Core 10 - again like it alot, £450 with disc brakes already fitted.
Both in local bike shops so I can see and feel them in person. My question is whether the 4500 is a better bike with brakes as extras, or would people recommend the Core in preference?

It depends how much you want to put into upgrading it in the future, if you go for the Trek, then get totally hooked you would probably end up buying better brakes than those supplied with the Genesis.0
