What size of rim tape do I buy for a road wheel? I thought I had nothing better to do that just buy the stuff, however, there seems to be quite a choice of sizes.

Cheers,
Adam

Usually the manufacturers state a preferred size on their websites. Mavic do for their rims too. e.g. Open Pro supposed to be 16mm. Velox works fine a size smaller though

In fact other sizes will do as long as they cover the holes, eyelets etc. without being too bulky. It probably doesn't matter if it is a bit too big except it may make it more difficult to get the tyres on and off.
I\'m sure I had one of those here somewhere

I run mostly tubies but I hear that velo plugs not rim tape is the way to go now.

Now that sounds like a good idea - just did a search and although they are more expensive than rim tape if they work ok, even a small amount of weight saved there will make a difference.

BTW - cloth rim tapes like Velox are much better than plastic ones IMO as the plastic sort can lead to problems with tubes bursting especially if very light or latex.

I also know people who use cork plugs, which takes a bit of work .
    Velo plugs sound pretty easy.

  • Yes. Fabric rim tape does the trick for me every time. I've usually only seen it in two widths. MTB & Road. Not sure about plugs as never used them. Nobody in my club uses them either. I suspect it's the extra weight!

32 veloplugs weigh just over 5 grams

If 5 grams is true it couldn't be the extra weight. Even the weight weenies can't come up
with an arument against 5 grams.

Particularly given normal rim tape weighs much more than that! Even better if you've got a low spoke count rim. I've just bought some for my new build precisely because I am a weenie...

Personally I'm not a big fan of Velox - it's rather thick and so makes mounting and removing tyres harder. hence I normally use Conti Supersonic tape, which works in a similar way with an adhesive backing, but is noticeably thinner (apart from on the MTB of course where I run tubeless!)
