Had a trip to Penmacnho today as i fancied a crack at loop 1+2. Got there and i was the only person there and did not see a single person on the trail. Weather was pretty turd aswell and trial was full of puddles.

Anyway joined loop 2 and about 2/3 of the way through loop 2 i smashed my rear mech on a big rock on some singletrack - not good! The part with the jockey wheels had bent inwards and also twisted so the chain was entering it at an angle. Basically i had to stay in the top ring at the rear as using the others the chain was all over the place. Had a go at fixing it but nothing would work. I decided to carry on the trail but my legs were gettin knacked due to RPM and the chain was still jumpimg a bit and making a realy shite nosie. Time was gettin by now and was gettin a bit worried if i would get back before dark (i had arrived late due to traffic), plus i was soaked to the bone (my singletracks wernt very waterproof by this point) so i decided to head back on the fire roads. To my amazement i found the correct fire road (had no map) which brought me past the start of the first single track section on loop 1 and i headed back down to the car park arriving at 3.20pm (so not far from dark). I honestly though i was gonna end uo knocking on some farmers door asking for a lift to my car.

This is the first ive done anything serious to my bike in my 3 years of biking and it made me realise that you are pretty much screwed if you wreck your rear mech. Looks like ill paying a visit to wiggle and CRC later.

Just out of curiosity, how many people actualy carry a spare rear mech in their backpack?

You don't need to carry a spare rear mech, just a chain tool & allen key to remove the damaged mech, then you go single speed to get home!

Had to do this at the bottom of Wharncliffe Woods last year single speeded my bike (32/18 ratio), I beat 4 other riders to the top car park too :D

you can but chain growth would be such a problem if its a single pivot you can but all of the fancy linkages i dont think you can do it

Would work if you locked the rear shock out wouldn't it?
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

Yes, chain growth was a slight issue, but with the rear shock @ 300PSI it was almost as good as locked out. it did it's job & got me back to the carpark from the bottom of Wharncliffe.

The only way a full suss will work properly as a singlespeed with no chain growth is the have the pivot point around the BB, as per the Kona A.

Some suspension systems are more prone to chain growth, eg VPP bikes etc.

    I carry a spare mech hanger in my camelbak: http://www.silverfish-uk.com/products/3 ... =3m6d0b2s0

Though I pray I never have to use it, as I can just imagine how pissed off I would be if I had broken it. The air would definetly be blue lol.

Happened to my Patriot at the Kona Darkside (a long walk to the car park). The mech snapped and the mech hanger bent into the cassette. Lucky we bodged the mech hanger (as it has the dropout in it) by smashing it with a very large rock and I was at least able to freewheel the downhill bits on the way to the car park. Stuck a short cage on there now in the hope it doesn't happen again.
  • i once met someone whilst waiting for amate futher down the trail, who was doing the same who carried spare hope mono mini break pads with him. thought this was a little bit daft? a pump, leavers, patches glue, chain tool and a power link is the most i take
  • Broke my chain, it bent my middle ring and sliced into my avalanche 1.0 rear stays, not sure if it was partly responsible for my bb breaking shortly afterwards (like in one week when it was fixed!!!) i couldn't have ss back i was gutted on my '7'ish mile walk back
