front mech gear cables

how do you know how taught the gear cables have to be

    With the front mech on it's released position (ie inner ring) and the gear shifter fully released also, pull the cable through the cable clamp to take out any slack and then do the clamp up. No need to get it very taught, but there should be no slack at all in the cable.

    I always pull the end of my cable and hold some tension on it with a pair of pliers whilst I tighten the nut. That way there should be no slack left anywhere in the system. :D
