Have a friend with £1000 to spend

Presently torn between Trek 1.9 and a Focus Cayo 2008 has anyone got any experience with either of these bikes or their predecessors?

The trek is all aluminium with carbon forks ultegra groupset and Bontrager Race wheels

The Focus is an all carbon frame carbon forks with aluminium steerer, a ultegra groupset except chainset which is Truvativ Elita 2.2 and Mavic Aksium wheels.

All thoughts welcome and any wild card suggestions also to confuse things

  • Go into a trek dealer and test ride the 1.9 then you can make a decision.

Can't do that with the FOCUS as it is not sold thru a bike shop.

Test ride before making any decision for this amount of money

PS full carbon ltegra for a grand - Not with my money
Racing is life - everything else is just waiting
  • Focus - No question
  • or have they looked at the Planet-x as well.

Both the Focus & Planet-X have done very well in tests

You can return a Focus to wiggle for £20 if you don't like it and it is 'unridden' (i.e. showing no signs of being ridden). I'm sure PlanetX would take an unwanted bike back to as they are very accommodating and a pleasure to deal with - unlike the Saturday gimps you find in a lot of local bike shops.
I've lost count of how many times people have tried to educate you 'Down the Road' about modern markets, so I won't bother explaining again why a £1k carbon bike with Ultegra from the likes of Focus or PlanetX is absolutely fine.
  • I have a 2006 cayo expert, and its very good, as is the planet X from what I have heard from those I know that have one/tried one. The 2008 Focus models are even more bonkers value - I was looking at one of the cayo models with all ultegra and Fuclrum racins 3's for £1600 ffs. I paid £1300 for mine with so so FSA wheels and that was something of a bargain at the time!
  • Thanks for the replies

Looked at the planet-x however they tend to have fairly long top tubes compared to seat tube length. He got measured up and it suggested a top tube of approx 57 cm and a seat tube of 61cm (short torso long legs) I suggested getting a girls frame but he was not particularly impressed.

So he has not too much seat post showing looking for slightly sloping or conventional geometry I think. So the trek or Focus probably better in this respect.

Wiggle have 1 Cayo Expert (60cm) 2007 on sale for £999.99. but you might need to decide quick :)

That is one hell of a bike for a grand.
  • thanks Zendog the problem with the 60 cm is that the top tube is too long he actually initally went for the last 58 cm cayo expert 2007 (57cm top tube) that they had however they repied to say that there was a problem with their computer and they had none left .They did offer £50 of vouchers as compensation if he bought a cayo (not expert) 2008.

  • This is my exact Dilemma. Focus or Trek? I too have 1k to spend through cycle to work scheme but cannot get the 2007 expert becuse it has to be rrp of 1000. I am 5'8" and need to know which of the two would suit my short ass better? The Trek looks cool but would love a carbon frame

    A word of advice.
If you sell Treks then stop posting on this forum, you just antagonise people.
  • I was in the same position (with more or less the same money) a couple of months ago. All I would say is make sure you ride the thing first (which would rule out the Focus for me).

I've said this before on another thread but I had my mind set on a Le Monde. Had done for ages but just didn't get on with it when I actually road it. Tested a lot of bikes at that price point over the week (Scott, Bianchi, Felt; even a reduced price Wilier amongst others) but ended up with an Orbea Mortirolo.

It was actually a bit heavier than most of the other bikes I tested but just felt so damn stiff and fast once I started pushing the pedals round that I knew it was the one. I ride it every day and love it. But if I'd been choosing it out of a catalogue I would never have gone for it on the 'paper' stats.

PS. I don't work for Orbea promise! I've just become obsessed ever since I got my new bike - every day I find something new I like about it... :D

Strangely enough the shop he (tries to) link to from his profile does. What's really laughable if he works there, or even owns it, is that despite having had it pointed out to him that the link doesn't work and having actually corrected it, it still doesn't work (used to have 2 missing letters, now only one):lol::lol:
