Whats the main differences between the 2007 Langster and the 2008 Langster? I not that the newer model has Alexa R500 rims over S500s on the 2007 model but everything else looks similar.

Also, what the opinions on the Bianchi Pista? A fixed steely appeals to me but its already dearer than the Langster and will require brakes for road use. Dont want to spend more if its no better than a Langster

I didn't even think the wheels were different - I thought it was just paint!

I can't imagine there is that much difference between the wheel sets - neither will be that great (I have the 2007 model in 'rust' colour)

the langster is a good bike - lightweight, quick and nimble feeling - I love riding mine, especially in town.

the pista is a very smart bike indeed. but bear in mind that as wel as not having a front brake, it doesn't even have a mount for one so you need to either change the forks or have the fork crwon drilled to accept a brake caliper mount.

oh - also - in this price range, check out the Giant Bowery

same sort of concept - cheapish off the peg fixed gear - quite a smart looking thing in my eyes - loathed by many on here as apparently fixed gear bikes shouldn't be sloping geometry
    or made out of alloy...

    or something...
  • Thanks for the feedback. Took a look at the Bowery and not bad.

the langster aint a bad bike of the peg, the wheels are pish but the rest is nice, in fact I`m finding it a very comfortable bike to ride. Hopefully the puncture problems are sorted now ( thats why the wheels are poor quality finish ) Its lovely in the nice racing green colour :P

Go for the LEMOND better looking than the Langster.

Lemond is better looking with better cframe and components than the langster. i think this year's langsters look loads better than last year's.

By the way, the Bianchi pista comes with a drilled fork and so mounting a brake is as simple as tightening a couple of allen keys.

To be honest their aint much differance between the lot however the lemond muich as its a nice bike its like hens teeth in trying to get hold off and ain`t the same bike that retailed for £900 a year or so ago ! To the OP try and see the bikes you fancy unfortunately for me I did not have alot iof choice to go and see a fixed wheel bike. Only saw a Lemond and the Langster nothing else :( Contrary to some I`ve yet to see a langster on my commute or in fact anywhere up here, obviously not trendy enough :p
  • What about a Fuji Track? They seem good value......it's really a track starter bike so doesn't have calipers and levers but maybe worth a look!

fuji is a great bike, can be hard to find.

    langsters are ubiqitous in london.
  • Have you tried Brick Lane Bikes? They have a good range of single speeds......in fact, I think thats all they do. Good luck!

Another vote for the Lemond Fillmore...yep quite hard to get hold of, but there is a 55cm at Hardie bikes http://www.hardie-bikes.com in Fife which i saw at the weekend.

I have had one for about 6 months and i love it...it has had lots of positive comments here in Leeds.

    Cheers

Lemond can be made to look quite traditional/classic with a tan B17 and some orange shellac on white cloth tape. If I was buying off the shelf I would get the Lemond.
  • Loads of Fillmores in Action Bikes (the couple of branches that I've been in recently)
  • You could always try one of these. Someone in my club got rid of his Langster for one of these.

  • The w*nkster ….the Ford Escort of the cycle world …… yuk !

There are so many options out there for both off the peg and make your own, why go mainstream, or am I missing the point ?

Yes you are missing the point, it's a good bike, reasonably priced and is an ideal commuter. It's probably not the ideal bike if you are a poseur but that's not why people buy it. It may be mainstream but Giant, Lemond and Bianchi are hardly prime examples of biking sub-culture :D

Well if its Ford Escortesq , that would mean everyone has got one :p well not up here they don`t, not seen one yet, and you know what, its actually quite a nice bike to ride, so really don`t get all this negativity ??????

Also as much as folk keep going on about the Pearson, its the same as this and thats £50 less, but hey you take your chances !
  • All steel bikes are "Alloy" some are Aluminium Alloy and some Steel or Titanium Alloy. There are no Alloy frames.
  • All Metal bikes I should have said, the rant had me confused.

Yeah. My bike is made out of bits I found in 1952 in a skip outside a derelict velodrome in Barnsley. The frame was made by renowned framebuilder Stan Postelthwaite. It has no brakes and saddles are for poofs who want to sit down.

    Everything else is mainstream.

i'm partly tongue in cheek. but these are the things i am not particularly fond of:

    1. the sloping top tube and extraordinarily relaxed geometry
    2. the specious marketing and soulless incorporation of as many aspects of 'counter culture' as can be squeezed in
    3. the stupid gearing
    4. the ubiquity, and the fact that there are better bikes, with more substance, and less 'style'
    5. the erect-dog's-penis style bar tape

    amongst other things.

Please explain. I have never seen an erect dog's penis.

By the way, even if it is tongue in cheek, if a little bit of sick rises in your throat every time you see a sloping top tube, you really need to get out more.

a little bit of sick doesn't rise in my throat every time i see one.

    it's dry humour.

    nevermind.
