Commuter Wheels

Can anyone please recommend a decent set of commuting wheels? Current wheels are just not up to the job and are going out of true like there's no tomorrow (to the extent that the tyre was rubbing the frame really badly this week and I have to back off the brake adjustment).

Not looking for anything light-weight, just something that will stay true under load and on a varying road surface quality. Oh, and as cheap as possible!

Thanks!

The Quest Como wheels are cheap and meant to be bombproof. Failing that go to your local LBS and get them to build you a new pair to your budget telling them what you want them for.

yes, I've had a pair of these and they are super, super strong.
    A bit heavy, but bombproof

700c? Get some Mavic A719 or Sun Rhyno 36 hole rims, some Hope or Dura Ace hubs, some DT Competition double butted spokes and build them yourself. For about £150 (or quite a bit less, on Ebay or DIY) you should be able to buy a decent truing stand, a tesiometer, a nipple driver and a decent spoke key, and get Roger Musson's excellent e-book on how to do it for £8 or so online. (www.wheelpro.co.uk IIRC) You'll be £100 out of pocket compared to having them made for you, but you'll be able to maintain them for free forever, and there is simply no feeling like riding on a superb set of wheels you made yourself. I write as someone new to the game and my very first set were as tight as they could be, evenly tensioned, true and have remained so. I haven't looked back.

The Como Rims look good, nice and deep. I'm looking for a cheap winter pair myself. I was using Shimano R500's before I hit a brick in the road at 25 mph... It all went horribly wrong!
    It's all good.
  • the comos wouldn't go out of tru no matter what I did to them

Also, Musson's book is fantastic. Well worth the £8
I've bene biulding wheels for over 20 years and I was loath to spend money on a book, but I'm glad i did

About to buy a set of the Quest Comos for my winter hack myself. Can't go wrong at that price!
