Are campag ergo levers compatable with base shimano 9 speed cassette? As they seem cheaper than shimano sti's.Or is this asking for trouble?!

You'll be getting trouble if you try shimano levers with campag cassette or vice versa. Levers, cassette and mech ideally need to be the same. Diferent mechs move differing distances on cable pull.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • It can be done.

    here's one way.

Campag 10-speed ergo levers can be used with a shimano 9-speed cassette and rear mech by clamping the cable in a non-standard fashion, as shown here.

Note that the cheaper "QS" ergo levers are indexed at the front like Shimano, so you will have to get 2007/8 Chorus or Record, or look for a 2006 set, or get a Campag front mech (probably)
