Greasing hub bearings - old XT

My wheels are built on old XT hubs (about 16 years old). The hubs have covers on them with a little hole that has a red dot behind it. I have an idea that to grease the bearings you have to rotate this cover until the hole in the cover lines up with a hole in the inner cover so you can inject grease into the bearings. Is this the case? As you can probably tell I have never ever greased the bearings in thousands of miles

If this is the case is there any tips for doing this, I have the grease and an old syringe but do I need a proper grease injecting gun or similar?

Cheers :D

  • I have XT hubs on my 1991 Orange Clockwork. Yes you just slide the little hole to the open position. I used BlackGold grease which came in sort of injector. Worked OK. Have to say, all my Shimano XT stuff is still working fine after thousands of miles.
  • Cheers Peter. Grease syringe at the ready for weekend :D
