How long does it take to be cycling again after a fractured clavicle? I crashed going to work on 2 Nov, my own fault not looking where i was going (usually to be recommended). All responses from Doc are vague and only refer to "movement", not hauling on the bars.
Any one with experience? Bike is fine.

Well Tyler Hamilton was back on the next day. But he was pumped full of drugs ;)

Everyone is different in healing in two ways, the damage that needs to repair and the body's own ability to repair itself.

Hope you get back into it sooner rather then later.

  • Not quite the same thing but I broke a bone in my wrist in the summer - 4 weeks in plaster, I tried to get on the bike with the cast on, but it was much too painful!!

Once the cast came off it was pretty painful and another week before I could even contemplate cycling, then a further week building up a bit more time in the saddle each day before it started to feel OK. Then it was at least another month before I was what I'd call pain free. (The injury happened in mid-August - I can still feel the odd twinge but I'd say it's 99% recovered now)

At every stage, I let the pain be my guide - my wrist communicated to me very clearly what it would and wouldn't let me do!!
  • Recovery depends a lot on age. I'm over 40 and did the same thing a few years ago-hit a patch of ice. It was a good 4 weeks before I felt comfortable enough to go back on the bike. A teenager would be back on within 5 days or so with an equivalent fracture.
  • Thanks for your comments. Sounds like its at least another month before I can hope to try a ride.
  • I fractured my right clavicle on 30/9 when I came off my mtb. I had surgery on 6/10, 3 days hosp & further 4wks in a sling. I am now having physio to put movement back into the shoulder joint. I have been using the turbo 1 handed for nearly 3wks for upwards of 40 mins at a time. The physio says I MAY be on the road before Xmas!!!!! I hope it's before that, I intend to go on a training camp in Jan/Feb. BTW I am 47yo...

Obviously eating good food will aid recovery.

I had a big off a couple of weeks ago. Fortuantly I didn't break anything although I'm not really sure how! I've just got a big hole below my knee which is taking longer than I expected to heal.
    It's all good.
