What bike for my girlfriend?

Been trying to get my girlfriend into m biking for the last year. Got her a Spec Hardrock Sport a while back. The problem is that it weighs a tonne and, being very petite, this makes it really difficult for her on the climbs. This results in a bad experience for her and makes her reluctant to ride.
What I am looking for is a nice light bike that will make climbing much easier for her. I was looking at a Spec 2007 D4W Rockhopper Disc as I know the frame is fairly light but £550 is a little over my budget.
Does any one have any other recommendations?
Cheers

I would also recommend looking at Bianchi range of bikes. There hard tales are very good weights for what they are. But also have a look at the Giant. Giant has a bit of a advantage that there the biggest cycle manufacture in the world and most of the bikes coming from Taiwan and China are made in the same factory. This includes Specialized, Scott USA, Iron Horse and so on.0
