Isn't cycling a sport? Why no cycling gear on sports shops?

TIll recently my local outdoor store sold some cycling gear - jerseys, luggage etc. However they've now stopped (guy who worked there and is a cyclist left a got a proper job).

Why do we have to go to seperate shops for 'Cycling Gear', 'Outdoor Gear' and 'Sports Gear'???? In Norway,a typical sports shop sells tracksuits, trainers, footballs, kayaks, bikes, hiking boots, raingear, guns, crossbows, ammunition, fishing tackle, fishing permits... ie. SPORTS GEAR!!!

  • I always found it funny that sports shops sold darts and snooker cues. They're not really sports are they?

You're lucky if you can get a sports shop that sells darts and snooker cues. Most around my way have racks and racks of white trainers and hooded tops.

Pastimes I would say. If you don't get out of breath its not really a sport in my book.

...sports shops in France sell cycling gear...Decathlon(a French company) sell bikes and cycling gear, as well as kit for nearly every sport you can think of over here...
...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...
  • Simple, a high street store needs volume of sales to survive, cycling is a minority sport, thus it isn't going to get a look in amongst the oikballer gear and chav-wear.
Remember that you are an Englishman and thus have won first prize in the lottery of life.
  • tbh, I wouldn't even go in a town-centre sports shop for my running gear - I go to a specialist running shop which has pressure pads, gait analysis and a treadmill for me to try out my shoes if needs be.
If I want proper advice I go to a proper shop, so there should always be a market for bike shops to just sell bike stuff.

As the guys in our LBS say to the parents of children who are concerned with paying more money for a decent MTB compared to a "Reebok" MTB for £69.99 from JJB - "If you want a toy, go to a toy shop, if you want a bike, go to a bike shop"....they've got a point....

Do you respect any of your fellow human beings, or are you Prince Philip? If the latter, happy wedding anniversary, old chap.

  • I was mainly thinking of clothing - some cycling jerseys along with the football, running and rugby jerseys wouldn't break the bank for Tracksuits'R'us.

To be honest, there's very little if any of the 'running' kit that I'd consider wearing in the JJB's of this world. It's all football kits and chav-wear
  • That is running kit. Running away from the fuzz kit.
