Sprain / tendon injury recovery tips?

Drain cover did this to me: http://chrisjsmith.me.uk/images/ouch3.jpg . Basically it's just a beaten up Achilles tendon and some swelling related bruising. A few muscles got a yank too.

I'm walking on it (2 weeks+1 day after accident) but I've noticed that the tendon is a lot tighter now than the other foot which is making me walk funny. Joint pain has stopped but there is a lot of surface pain from the swelling and some muscular pain above the tendon. My leg is still a bit purple. I can walk about a mile on it with a pair of crocs on (nothing else will fit!).

Anyone got any speedy recovery tips for this other than keep it up for a bit longer and downing anti-inflammatories (which is boring as hell)?

Bad sprains can take longer to heal than breaks so just be patient. I usually tell people that after an initail period of rest (one or two days) then the best thing you can do is keep using it to get the strength/suppleness back. Your body will let you know if you are doing too much (which it sound like yours may be). You just have to use it but be careful with it, it can be a difficult balance but keep working at it and it will get better.

  • Thanks for the advice :)

My doctor is unfortunately rubbish, suggesting I hobble on crutches for 4+ weeks (which is in itself painful as hell thanks to breaking my arm 3 years ago).
