Hi
Looking for opinions on sub £500 hardtails. was looking at Cove handjob but noticed all the Maxlights getting good reviews. I do mainly trail/towpath and a fair bit of road (mnot enough trails locally ! ) aswell any ideas anyone ?

Comments

  • Well I'd never buy a bike called a Handjob.

But Cove Bikes think their smutty names tickle the customers. So is it nice for you?
  • no definatly not, I'd pull the sticker off anyways :)
my LBS sells Sanderson and reckons the life frame is v good but havent heard of them before anyone else ? ( looks good too )
  • Apart from the naming scheme (which doesn't particularly offend me) Cove make excellent frames - personally I would go with one over a maxlight (which are also) good frames....

The Pace RC303 is also a great frame for all round trail riding... or a Santa Cruz chameleon...

What travel fork will you be using? Bit of difference in the Snaderson and the Cove!

Are you looking for a bike for under £500 or a frame?

  • probably a Marzocchi Bomber as my LBS can do a good price on them.(haven't got a massive budget what do you think on the sanderson? not much info on them on the web
  • just deciding on what frame for under £ 500 thanks

Marzocchi Bomber doesn't help as it's not actually a model name. What is the travel of the forks you have in mind - it'll help people make appropriate suggestions as for £500 you have a massive choice of hardtail frames.

  • Hi again
Sorry, forks are 100mm xc 500's

I have a Kinesis XC>120 and it claims to be adjusted for 110-130 forks but to be honest I run 130 (and if I had 140mm forks I'd run them). Any shorter and it would be a bit nose down and the BB height too low for my 175mm cranks.

With a 100mm fork, if you want a Kinesis frame, consider the XC2. Or alternatively consider getting a longer fork.

For example, you could get an XC>120 and a Rockshox Revelation dual air for £585 or a Handjob and Revelation for £685. Cheaper still if you got the coil fork!

  • Like the sound of that Splasher havent even seen a Kinesis in the real, look quite tempting
especially considering the price ! I've got a Carrera Krak at the mo with some nice wheels etc and am looking at replacing frame, forks etc.what size frame do you reckon for 6' 2"
? are you happy with yours?

I'm 6"2 and a half and I ride the biggest size - 54cm from memory. It's a bit short and I use a layback seatpost but other than that it's great. Very light and agile with good trail manners. Doesn't have the cache of a Cove though if that's important to you.

  • no not really bothered about the name just noticed a few around bfore i started cycling asgain last year  is the standover low enough for you ? my carrera is a 20 " and i find it too big especially off road

    Standover's fine for me.

Another option is that I have a fork that's for sale - it's a 2006 Marzocchi All Mountain 1. It's 130-150mm adjustable and it's very plush and very strong. I'm selling it only because I've bought a Fox 36.

It would overwhelm an XC>120, but depending on your riding intentions would be perfect on the Kinesis Pha5e. I'm looking for £180 delivered for the fork and the frame http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=8250 is £360 at CRC. That would give you an agressive XC/Trail bike for £540. Piccies here
